When a yard comes with history, transforming it requires sensitivity, skill, and imagination. Originally landscaped two decades prior by a renowned local architect, this Kitsilano backyard needed revitalization that respected its heritage character while incorporating some whimsical touches.
These clients envisioned a multifunctional, whimsical outdoor space. A space that preserved historical elements while feeling modern, accommodated tight Kitsilano parking demands, and created an elegant setting for entertaining and relaxing. Above all else, the space needed to feel organic without being overly manicured.
Charming Yet Functional
Careful and intentional design was crucial with severely limited space and a complex wishlist. We rebuilt the failing back porch, patio, and stairs, thoughtfully integrating granite pilings and hardwood details that matched the original materials.
Mature plantings, including a stunning banana leaf plant, were carefully preserved, while a custom mosaic board added playful character. The multifunctional covered carport was designed to easily transition into a stylish entertainment space whenever needed, making it ideal for both everyday parking needs and hosting guests.
Where Organic Beauty Meets Expert Craftsmanship
Achieving the client's whimsical yet natural vision demanded precise craftsmanship in every detail. Organic curves, carefully placed natural stones, and integrated lush plantings softened structured elements, avoiding an overly manicured look. Each stone, tile, and plant was thoughtfully chosen and positioned to create an effortlessly beautiful and genuinely inviting space.
A Collaborative Design-Build Approach
This unique project greatly benefited from our design-build approach. Keeping our designer involved throughout the entire construction process allowed us to continually refine micro details and avoid design fatigue, enhancing functionality and beauty.
This active collaboration resulted in a stunning, award-winning transformation that honoured the home's heritage, delighted the clients, and became a proud example of our team's creative and technical excellence. It was a true labour of love and a favourite among our team.
